3) Describe and explain an expressive example of the following aspects of the clip; Camerawork, editing, sound & mise-en-scene.
Camerawork -
In this clip, an example of an expressive shot would have to be when Dead pool, the hero, is looking up at Colossus, the side-kick, in a 'Medium two shot' where both of them can be seen almost facing off. This shows the size difference between the Hero and the Side-kick, and gives it a hilarious comedic effect, as Dead Pool has to look up at Colossus making it seem like Dead Pool is inferior to him. Furthermore, this shot establishes that the Hero doesn't care who he is talking to and feel's socially superior to them, even though he is inferior in strength. Yet again this makes the shot comedic. This shot is followed by a cut-away to another Medium two shot of 2 unrelated characters in the film, possibly making the audience feel inferior to the two arguing as they are put in the shoes of the two irrelevant characters standing about and staring in awe.
Editing -
Editing in this clip was quite hard to spot as it was a very comedic scene. However, there was a cutaway which took us away from the heated duel of words between the hero and the side-kick. This was clearly done to achieve a comedic effect, as the two extra just stare at each other blankly as they listen to their conversation. This also makes it sound better as the viewer has to imagine how the conversation is taking place. This cutaway also gives the viewers a feeling of irresponsibility as they are arguing in front of an incident like it doesn't matter and the others are clearly confused as to how they are so calm and collected; comedic, but irresponsible. Furthermore, this clip also follows the action, so for example when Dead Pool is talking the camera is on him, but cuts over to the reaction of Fire fist, which is not very nice. It then immediately cuts over to the impact on the sidekicks, which is quite funny as Dead Pool dodges them all, and lets the other x-men deal with the impacts of the attack. This reinforces that this is a comedic type of editing.
Mise-en-scene -
The beginning of the scene at around 0:07 you can see Fire fist he is in contrast to everyone except Dead-Pool but everyone else is wearing black as to show enforcement and authority. The reason they are wearing red, dead-pool and Fire fist, it creates the feeling that they are both connected in this story and a minority in the sense of them acting different to others in the film. As the scene moves forward to 0:21 it blurs out the background and once again as Dead-pool acts different to others and stands up to Colossus this scene gives it a comedic effect this is to target there primary audience who know Dead-pool is funny. The scene at 0:46 shows Fire fist surrounded by destroyed cars and fire then it goes back to Dead-pool and once again creates a comedic effect as Dead-pool doesn’t care which is why in the background there is trees and a calm environment.
Sound -
When the scene starts, we hear non-diagetic music during the landing of the X men aircraft. The use of this anticipating music creates an overwhelming sense of heroism for the characters inside the aircraft (Dead Pool, Colossus and warhead), this puts a divide between the characters involved due to the fact that it allows us to identify the hero's and in turn, the villain(s). However, as this is a comedy, the atmosphere that this music generates is quite quickly shattered when we see the hero's walk out in an non-hero like fashion which creates a comedic effect which benefits the genre of the film. Also, at around 1:10 in the scene, we start hearing the blowing and the crackling of the fire that is present around the villain (fire fist), this generates an atmosphere of evil which is made comedic with the fact that Dead Pool is still making jokes during this dark atmosphere, hence why the film is a comedy.
